Over-the-range (OTR) microwaves are a kitchen staple, saving counter space while doubling as a range hood. But when yours starts making strange noises, stops heating properly, or just looks outdated, it’s time for a replacement.
Luckily, swapping it out isn’t as complicated as you might think—if you know what you’re doing. If you’re up for the challenge, here’s how to replace your OTR microwave safely and efficiently.
Step 1: Choose the Right Replacement
Before you start unscrewing anything, make sure your new microwave fits the space. Measure the width, height, and depth of your existing unit, as well as the location of the mounting bracket and venting system. Most over-the-range models are 30 inches wide, but height and depth can vary. If your old microwave vents to the outside, your new one must match that configuration—or you’ll need to modify your setup.
Step 2: Gather Your Tools
You don’t need a workshop full of tools for this job, but a few essentials will make things easier:
- Screwdriver (Phillips and flathead)
- Power drill with bits
- Stud finder
- Measuring tape
- Level
- Painter’s tape (optional)
- A second pair of hands (trust us, this isn’t a one-person job)
Step 3: Disconnect and Remove the Old Microwave
Safety first—unplug your microwave and turn off power at the breaker if necessary. If your unit is hardwired, you’ll need to disconnect the wiring before removal.
Next, locate the mounting screws inside the cabinet above the microwave. These hold it in place. While one person supports the weight of the microwave, remove the screws carefully. Slowly tilt the microwave forward to release it from the mounting bracket, then lift it down and set it aside.
Check the wall for any damage or leftover adhesive. If your new microwave comes with a different mounting bracket, remove the old one and patch any holes before installation.
Step 4: Install the New Mounting Bracket
Most microwaves include a mounting template to help align the bracket correctly. Tape it to the wall, making sure it’s level. Use a stud finder to locate studs, as at least one screw should be secured into a stud for stability.
Drill pilot holes where needed and attach the new bracket securely. Double-check the alignment—an uneven bracket means an uneven microwave.
Step 5: Position and Secure the New Microwave
Now comes the tricky part: lifting the new OTR microwave into place. Have your helper support the unit while you carefully guide the power cord through the upper cabinet hole. Align the microwave with the mounting bracket and tilt it back until it clicks into place.
While still supporting the microwave, secure it by reinstalling the top screws through the cabinet above. Tighten them enough to hold the microwave firmly, but don’t overdo it—you don’t want to strip the screws or damage the cabinet.
Step 6: Connect Power and Venting
If your microwave is plug-in, simply reconnect it to the outlet. If it’s hardwired, you’ll need to reconnect the wiring, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
For venting, ensure the exhaust fan is properly aligned with your ductwork or recirculating filter. If you need to adjust the direction of the vent, consult your microwave’s manual before securing everything in place.
Step 7: Test and Final Adjustments
With everything installed, turn the power back on and test your microwave. Check the exhaust fan, interior light, and cooking functions. If anything seems off, double-check connections and mounting stability.
Finally, wipe down the exterior and step back to admire your work—your kitchen just got an upgrade.
